What Can I do to minimize risk when I do have to go out?

Here are some suggestions and advice. These are the procedures we’re trying to use here. These are not from any outside source, other than culling information I’m getting in general, and trying to put it into daily practice.

  1. If you have a mask, (we’re making them ourselves), wear it when you are in a store or other public place. Keep your hair up, or consider wearing a hat while you’re out.
  2. Consider wearing gloves when shopping. This keeps you from touching common surfaces with your bare hands. It also makes opening those produce bags a nightmare, however.
  3. Consider using apple pay or other contactless payment options at the store. If not, and if you have to hand your phone or credit card to someone, remember to disinfect when you get home.
  4. After shopping, load the car. Take off the gloves and put them in a bag before you touch your steering wheel. Use hand sanitizer.
  5. Get home, put on gloves to unload car. Take gloves off and put back in bag or, preferably, put them in the wash/disinfect.
  6. Ideally, if you have supplies, wipe down cans, boxes etc. before you put them in your pantry.
  7. After unloading the groceries, wash hands and consider changing clothes and/or taking a shower.
  8. Keep your shoes in the mudroom or particular place in your home. Everyone should use the same place.
  9. Remember to disinfect your phone/credit cards when you return home. We have Phonesoap, a UV-c disinfecting system, so I put my phone in, and later do a cycle for my credit cards. any cash handed back and forth, and even my keys. I will warn you- phonesoap is severely backordered, but you might want to consider getting on a list, because I suspect we’ll need this again in the future.
